Frequently asked questions

Understand the process before you take the next step.

How We Work

What is the first step?

Start with a free 30-minute intro call. We discuss your priorities and whether we are a fit. You don’t need to bring anything.

Project or ongoing relationship?

The Equity Strategy Engagement is a standalone project. Ongoing relationships combine financial planning and investment management.

How long does the initial engagement take?

The Equity Strategy Engagement takes 4 to 8 weeks, with kickoff, strategy and follow-up Q&A sessions. You receive the written deliverable within five business days of the strategy session.

What does fiduciary mean?

A fiduciary is legally obligated to act in your best interests when providing advice.

How are you compensated?

We are fee-only: a flat fee for projects, a monthly planning fee for ongoing planning, and a percentage of assets under management. Exact fees are discussed on the intro call and disclosed in Form ADV.

Who do you work best with?

Established professionals and families with equity compensation, tax complexity and investment accounts that need a coordinated strategy.

What if my situation changes?

A job move, acquisition, tender offer or relocation prompts a fresh look at your model, withholding and allocation.

Do you work with clients outside California?

Services are available where Hawk Advisory is registered or exempt from registration. We confirm availability for your state on the intro call.

Financial Planning

What does a financial plan include?

Equity compensation, tax strategy, cash flow, investment coordination, retirement planning, estate and insurance coordination, and major financial decisions.

How is this different from working with a CPA?

Your CPA prepares and files tax returns. We build a forward-looking plan that connects your taxes, equity compensation and investments, coordinating with your CPA.

How often will we meet?

About six meetings in the first year, followed by four structured meetings a year. Between meetings, email access supports time-sensitive questions and life changes.

What does the first engagement look like?

Kickoff, analysis, a strategy session and follow-up Q&A, with a written deliverable and clear action plan over 4 to 8 weeks.

Do I need to organize my documents first?

No. Share your documents through the secure client portal, and we organize and analyze them.

How long before the plan takes effect?

The initial project takes 4 to 8 weeks. Implementation follows the strategy and your agreed relationship. No investment performance or financial outcome is guaranteed.

Can I work with you on a one-time project?

Yes. The Equity Strategy Engagement is available as a standalone project. Ongoing clients engage in both planning and investment management.

What should I bring to the discovery session?

We request two recent tax returns, pay stubs, equity grant details and recent account statements through a secure portal. The initial intro call requires no documents.

Investment Management

What does managing my investments involve?

Portfolio construction, asset location, tax-aware trading, tax-loss harvesting, rebalancing and equity-event coordination, under your advisory agreement.

Where are managed accounts held?

Managed portfolios are held in your name at Altruist, an independent qualified custodian. You retain ownership and direct access.

How is investment management priced?

As a percentage of assets under management, billed quarterly in arrears from managed accounts. Planning has a separate fee within the relationship. See Form ADV for details.

What happens if I stop working with you?

Trading authority is removed and your holdings remain in your accounts. Ending the relationship does not require forced sales.

How does this differ from a robo-advisor or DIY?

We coordinate your portfolio with your specific tax position, equity compensation schedule and broader financial plan.

What is your investment approach?

Diversified portfolios using low-cost ETFs and index funds, tailored to your time horizon, risk tolerance and tax situation.

How do taxes factor in?

Asset location, tax-lot selection, loss harvesting and sale timing are considered alongside your income, vesting schedule and overall tax picture.

Tax Planning

Do you prepare tax returns?

Tax preparation is available as a relationship service for ongoing advisory clients.

Can I work with you just for tax planning?

Tax planning is integrated into financial planning and investment management rather than offered as a standalone service. An equity or tax question can be the starting point for the initial engagement.

Can I keep my existing CPA?

Yes. We coordinate directly with your CPA so planning decisions align with what gets filed.

Can you model a move from California?

We analyze the tax impact of a relocation or remote work arrangement, including income sourcing and California’s treatment of departing residents.

What is the difference between tax planning and preparation?

Preparation reports what happened. Planning looks ahead to withholding, equity decisions, estimated payments and investment sales before deadlines close.
